The bay at Loh Buaya, Rinca Island, from the air

Location silo · Anchorage

Rinca, and why most charters go here first

Closer than Komodo Island, a shorter walk, and in several seasons the better sighting. The dragons do not know which island is more famous.

Dragons are most active in the cool of the early morning. By eleven they are lying in shade and the walk becomes a hot one with less to see.

What Loh Buaya is

A ranger post, and the animals around it

Loh Buaya is the visitor bay on Rinca — a jetty, a raised boardwalk, a ranger station and trails leading into dry savannah and lontar palm.

Dragons gather near the station because the ground is open and warm. Further out you are walking their territory rather than watching from a viewing area.

  • Short, medium and long trail options from the same post
  • Wild boar, Timor deer and macaques on the same walk
  • Raised boardwalk from the jetty before the trail proper

How it runs

Ninety minutes ashore

From a boat anchored in the bay. Charters usually take the medium trail unless the group asks otherwise.

    Tender ashore

Cool air, and the dragons still out in the open rather than under cover.

    The trail

Savannah and palm, with the ranger reading tracks and stopping when something is worth stopping for.

Often the best sightings are here — nesting areas and the ground around the kitchens.

The ranger sets the pace and the route on the day, based on where the animals actually are. It is not a fixed loop.

The question everyone asks

Rinca or Komodo Island?

Both have dragons. The differences are distance, terrain and how long you have.

This page

Rinca — Loh Buaya

  • Closer to Labuan Bajo, so it fits a shorter charter
  • Easier walking — savannah rather than hill
  • Denser dragon population around the ranger post
  • The standard stop on a 3D2N route

The alternative

Komodo Island

  • Larger island, further out, needs the extra night
  • Harder terrain and a longer walk
  • A distinct dragon population and more ambitious routes
  • Usually a deliberate choice on 4D3N and up

On a four-night charter you can do both and compare. On three nights, take Rinca — the extra travel to Komodo Island costs you a reef stop.

The animal itself

Six rules the ranger will give you

Komodo dragons are wild predators with a serious bite. The rules exist because people have been hurt ignoring them.

  • Keep the distance

The ranger sets it. It is further than it looks necessary, and that is the point.

  • Stay with the group

Never walk ahead or drop behind. Dragons take the isolated animal in any species.

  • Do not run

They are fast over short distances and running triggers pursuit.

  • Open wounds, tell someone

Including menstruation. Rangers ask for a reason and will adjust the group.

  • No crouching for photos

Getting low reads as prey posture. Shoot standing.

  • Quiet on the trail

You see more, and you startle less.
