Cloud drifting over the three bays of Padar Island

Padar, and the reason you anchor there overnight

The three-bay ridge is the most photographed view in Indonesia. Whether it is worth the climb depends almost entirely on what time you start it.

The climb is stepped most of the way and reachable for most fitness levels. It is the heat that beats people, not the gradient — which is the whole argument for going early.

What you are looking at

Three bays, three different sands

Padar sits between Komodo and Rinca, a ridge of volcanic rock with three curved bays cut into it — one white sand, one black, one with the pink tint that gives the park its other famous beach.

Nobody lives on the island. There is a jetty, a stepped trail and a ranger post, and that is the extent of it.

  • Steps and boardwalk most of the way to the first viewpoint
  • Higher points are unmade trail and loose rock
  • No shade, no water and no shop on the island

How it runs

The climb, hour by hour

From a boat anchored off the island overnight. Day trips from Labuan Bajo arrive two hours into this timeline.

  1. 04:45

    Tender ashore

Dark, cool, and the jetty to yourselves. Torches from the boat.

    • Tender
    • jetty
    • ranger post
  2. 05:00

    Start climbing

Steps and boardwalk. Forty minutes at an unhurried pace to the main viewpoint.

    • Stepped trail
  3. 05:45

    The ridge

Light arrives across the three bays. This is the twenty minutes the whole thing is for.

    • Three-bay viewpoint
  4. 06:20

    Down before the heat

Descent takes half the time. You pass the first day boats coming up.

    • Descent
    • jetty
  5. 06:45

    Breakfast aboard

Back on the boat and under way while the ridge fills up behind you.

    • Breakfast
    • next anchorage

Day charters from Labuan Bajo cannot make this timeline — they arrive around 07:30 at the earliest. That is the practical difference an overnight buys.

Worth knowing

Six things people get wrong

None of this is difficult. All of it is easier to hear before you are halfway up.

  • Shoes with grip

The upper section is loose rock. Flip-flops are how ankles get turned.

  • Carry water

There is none on the island. One bottle each, from the boat.

  • No shade at all

Which is why an 05:00 start is not enthusiasm, it is sense.

  • The classic frame

Is from the first viewpoint, not the summit. Most people over-climb.

  • Go early or late

The ridge is genuinely crowded between 08:00 and 10:00.

  • Park fees apply

Collected at the ranger post, and set by the park authority.

The only real choice

Sunrise or golden afternoon

Both work. They give you completely different photographs and completely different crowds.

Most guests

Sunrise

  • Cool air on the climb, which matters more than you expect
  • Light comes across the bays rather than behind them
  • The ridge is nearly empty until about seven

The alternative

Late afternoon

  • Warmer climb, and the day fleet has gone
  • Softer light, and the bays in shadow
  • Fits a route that anchors elsewhere overnight

Midday is the one to avoid — hardest climb, hardest light, and the busiest hour on the trail.
